The government plans to introduce big increases in probate fees which may have effect in respect of applications received by Probate Registries from as early as 1st May 2017. The current fee for applications submitted by solicitors is £155, or by personal applicants £215, irrespective of the size of the estate. The new fees will be based on the size of the estate. Small estates up to £50,000 will pay no fee; estates up to £300,000 will pay £300; up to £500,000, £1,000; up to £1m, £4,000; up to £1.6m, £8,000; up to £2m, £12,000 and over £2m the fee will be £20,000.
